September Focus: Healthy Lawns

Grass seeding
For a new lawn, you’ll need to prepare the soil prior to planting seed or installing sod. During drier months our Soil Mix will be your best choice to help with water retention. As Fall weather approaches, either Soil Mix or Lawn Base can provide good results. Ask about our time saving Blower & Conveyor service to help with the soil install.

For established lawns, overseeding can help rejuvinate older areas. You’ll need to start this a month prior to the first fall frost. The Willamette Valley usually see its first frost in the second half of October.

  • Correct existing lawn problems
  • Select a matching grass seed
  • Spread the seed
  • Fertilize overseeded areas
  • Maintain consistent moisture the first 4-5 days, then transition back to regular periodic watering
  • Return to your regulary scheduled maintenance

Dethatching, Liming, as well as other amendments and procedures may be called for to acheive best results. If the pH is on the low side (below 6.0), add lime. It’s common in western Oregon for lawns to need lime every two to three years.

Lawn Fertilizer
During September and October, you’ll want to get your lawn ready to survive the winter. For an established lawn, try our 25-7-12 fertilizer. If your lawn is just starting out, we recommend using our 10-20-20 starter fertilizer.

Watering during Cooler Months
As cooler weather returns, dial back your watering schedule to reduce the possibility of overwatering your lawn. One inch of water per week is adequate for your lawn. Take into account any rainfall and adjust your watering accordingly. Fungus, root rot, wilting grass, and excess runoff are all signs your lawn is getting too much water.

“These guys are awesome. Made the right recommendations for my truck size and were super helpful in determining the proper material for the project. All in all excellent service and superior attitude.”
– Dakine E.

“I came in on a Saturday afternoon. It was cold and drizzly and the gentleman that helped me load was still very courteous and friendly and smiled the entire time! It was a really surprisingly pleasant and cost-effective experience for getting wood! (I didn’t realize your prices were so good!)”
– Mishel W.

“I have been very pleased with Highway Fuel over the years. I get a lot of soil and compost products as well as pellets in the winter. They delivered 2 truck loads of soil mix to me this morning. Their driver was terrific – he worked with me to get it unloaded in the right place and in a way that took hours off my work to move it around. Competitive prices – great people! Thank you.”
